The most important factor related to a student's success is their teacher.

There is no greater influence on the success of a student than the quality of the teacher.
There is no greater influence on the success of a student than the quality of the teacher.

Walk into any modern school, and you’ll likely see sleek classrooms, cutting-edge technology, and innovative learning tools designed to enhance education. These advancements are exciting and can certainly support learning, but they alone do not guarantee student success. A beautifully designed space means little without the right people and practices in place. At the heart of meaningful education lies the human element—the relationships, strategies, and intentional practices that empower students to learn, grow, and thrive. Over my thirty-plus years in education, I’ve seen firsthand that the most successful classrooms aren’t just about what’s in them, but about who is in them. In this post, we’ll explore the key factors that truly shape student achievement and the vital role educators play in creating impactful learning experiences.

1. Building Strong Relationships

A positive classroom environment is essential for student success, and its foundation lies in strong relationships.  Dr. Harris Heath, one of my favorite education professors and one the wisest mentors I’ve ever had, would often say, “No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship.”

Relationships between teachers and students are the cornerstone of trust and engagement. When we as teachers understand our students' interests, strengths, and challenges, we’re better equipped to create a safe space where students feel seen, heard, and valued. This trust empowers students to take risks, ask questions, and fully engage in learning, which enhances both their academic outcomes as well as their emotional growth.

Equally important are the relationships developed between students. A classroom where peers connect, collaborate, and support one another fosters a sense of belonging and safety. These relationships encourage empathy, active listening, and teamwork, creating a dynamic and inclusive learning community. By prioritizing relationships at all levels, teachers and principals can cultivate environments where students thrive academically and socially.

2. Recognizing and Leveraging Prior Knowledge

Every student brings unique experiences and prior knowledge to the classroom, which serves as the lens through which they interpret their world. Recognizing and building upon their existing strengths is a critical factor for helping them achieve success, as well as understanding their deficits so that they can be better supported in those areas where additional assistance is required.

Effective teachers assess their students’ starting points and tailor instruction accordingly. By connecting new content to students’ prior knowledge, we can make learning more relevant and accessible. This personalized approach bridges gaps, honors each student’s journey, and helps create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.

3. Valuing Diverse Student Characteristics

Students come to the classroom with varied learning styles, cognitive abilities, and socioeconomic backgrounds—all of which influence how they perceive and engage with new material.

Highly effective teachers embrace these differences through the use of differentiated instruction. They adapt teaching strategies, materials, and pacing to meet individual needs, ensuring every student has an equal opportunity to succeed. Additionally, by understanding the challenges students face outside the classroom, such as limited access to resources, as educators we can help address these external barriers and foster resilience. Meeting students where they are empowers them to overcome obstacles and grow both academically and personally.

4. Cultivating Motivation

Motivation is a powerful driver of student success. It can be intrinsic, stemming from a natural curiosity, or extrinsic, influenced by rewards and recognition.

Teachers play a key role in nurturing motivation. By creating opportunities for early successes and providing positive reinforcement, they can help students develop a sense of capability and confidence. Over time, these external motivators can evolve into intrinsic ones, fostering a long-lasting love for learning. This transformation is essential for cultivating resilient, self-motivated learners who are eager to tackle challenges.

5. Delivering High-Quality Instruction

The quality of instruction is one of the most significant determinants of student success. Engaging, dynamic teaching strategies that actively involve students in their learning lead to deeper understanding and better outcomes.

Techniques like project-based learning, hands-on activities, and interactive technology encourage critical thinking and creativity. Research consistently shows that such active learning approaches improve retention and foster a love for the subject matter. Effective instruction also includes differentiating lessons for diverse learners and continuously adapting to meet the needs of the class.

6. Providing Timely and Constructive Feedback

Feedback is a high-impact teaching strategy that is often overlooked. Timely, specific feedback helps students reflect on their progress, understand their strengths, and identify areas for improvement.

Formative assessments, such as quizzes, discussions, or observations, allow teachers to gauge student understanding during the learning process. This approach provides immediate opportunities to adjust instruction and support students in real time. Active engagement in the feedback process ensures that students not only recognize their successes but also learn from their mistakes, fostering meaningful growth.

7. The Impact of Effective Teachers

While all these factors are crucial, research consistently shows that the effectiveness of the teacher is the single most important determinant of student success. Teachers are the magic in the classroom, much like Disney’s cast members bring life to every attraction.

Effective teachers combine subject knowledge, pedagogical skill, and personal qualities to create engaging learning environments. They connect with students on a personal level, adapt their methods to meet diverse needs, and continuously reflect on their practice to improve. Passion, care, communication, and collaboration are hallmarks of exceptional educators, making them the cornerstone of impactful education.

What Makes an Effective Teacher?

Effective teachers embody several key qualities:

  • Content Expertise: They have a deep understanding of their subject and can communicate it clearly.

  • Adaptability: They adjust teaching strategies to meet the unique needs of their students.

  • Passion and Care: They build meaningful relationships and foster a positive classroom environment.

  • Collaboration: They work with colleagues, families, and communities to support student success.

  • Reflective Practice: They regularly assess their own teaching and strive for continuous improvement.

The Path to Student Success

From building strong relationships to delivering high-quality instruction and timely feedback, educators have the power to shape environments that foster curiosity, resilience, and growth. By embodying the qualities of effective teachers, they ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their starting point.

At Disney, there’s a saying: “The people are the magic.” No matter how immersive or innovative a space may be, its true impact comes from the people who bring it to life. The same is true in education. A beautifully designed school filled with the latest technology can certainly enhance learning, but it’s the teachers, administrators, and support staff who truly shape a student’s experience. At the end of the day, it’s the people—not the tools or the spaces—that make the magic happen. As educators, we have the incredible opportunity to create environments where students feel seen, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential. Let’s embrace that responsibility and continue making a difference—because the real magic in education starts with us.
